Chairman's Report - Aug 2013

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT – August 2013

It has been good to be back more fully involved in the running of the club and I am delighted to report that our main sponsors are once more on board and that Buster White has signed up as our full time 1st XV Coach. The club is a solid position both financially and from a playing and support front and it is one from which I hope we can build on this season.

The 1stXV had a tough season last year in our second season in the London South West 3 league and had a number of very narrow losses that could have gone the other way and missed out on a number of possible bonus point loses as well. Unfortunately they ended up being relegated to Surrey 1. However we aim to bounce straight back up and certainly have the players to do this with.

The 2ndXV also had a tough season, not helped by injuries and player unavailability at 1st XV level and more generally. I am sure this season they will be able to come back strongly and hopefully achieve better results. With continued efforts and availabilities next season both sides could comfortably hit the top of their table.

The 3rd XV wasn’t really able to get off the ground despite huge efforts by all to magic up some players, but the games they played were played in the true spirit of Old Blues. Los Revs (the Vets) once more had no losses and fine wins in the three or four games played – long may they continue, although my cameo moments for them are probably now at an end.

Many thanks to Gethyn Deakins, Dan Harding, Olly Sayers and Olly Derbyshire for all their hard work in getting teams out and delivering some excellent results. This season Gethyn has stepped down from the captaincy of the 1st XV and Will Avery has taken over from him to run the ones, we wish him all success.

I would like to offer a huge vote of thanks to Olly Derbyshire who has moved to Asia and handed over the organisation of fixtures and refs to Eric Gimber. This was just one of many tasks that Olly took on and whilst he plans to still monitor availability and help with this he will be sorely missed by all. We wish him the best of luck and we’ll no doubt still hear from him regularly.

And so we eagerly await another fine season of Old Blues Rugby. Pre-season training has started, the clubhouse has had the customary spring clean, the web site is now fully revamped and we have a strong Committee and team captains in place. The fixtures have all been announced. All looks good!!

As a club we rely largely on volunteers to “step up” and without them the burden rests heavy on the shoulders of a few, so we are always actively looking for members to put themselves forward to help. If you are interested in doing this then please get in touch with me, we have plenty that you could do!

I would implore you to ensure you are paying the correct subscription by monthly direct debit or a match fee if you aren’t a regular player. I will be taking a close interest in this so beware – the subs police are out! This can be done easily online, amounts, debit forms and payment details are all available on the website.

I would like to thank again all the hard working officers of the club as well as our generous sponsor HDI Gerling for all the support they have shown both last season and for this coming season

Finally, good luck to everyone for a fantastic 2013/2014 season.
