Chairman's Report - July 2012

Chairman's Report - July 2012

Firstly I am delighted to have been asked to be Chairman of the club and look forward to getting involved again with all aspects of the running of Old Blues RFC. I would like to extend a huge thank you to Will “Shoulders” Fairbairn for his time as Chairman – I have big shoes to fill!!

The 1st XV had a strong season last year in our first season in the London South West 3 league and had a number of very narrow losses that could have gone the other way. They ended up finishing 7th in the League and showing the potential to improve and get further promotion. We certainly have the ambition for this as a club, which was shown in a fine win against our neighbours KCS (who were promoted) at the end of the season. The 2nd XV had a tough season, not helped by injuries and player unavailability, but were steered to a 6th place finish in Surrey 1 Conference and I am sure this season they will be able to build on this and hopefully achieve better resultsMany thanks to Gethyn Deakins, James Eaton and Olly Derbyshire for all their hard work in getting teams out and delivering some excellent results. This season Gethyn has stepped up to continue to captain the 1st XV and Dan Harding has taken over from James to run the 2nd XV, we wish them all success.

The 3rd XV unfortunately ended up at the foot of the Surrey Combination 2 league and were unable to always field a full side, but despite this spirits remained high and they were able to build up momentum and with regular numbers hopefully building the mighty Bedouins can look forward to a more successful 2012/13. The Vets have sadly not re-emerged but in their place we have been fielding “Los Revolutionaries” – a brave bunch of die hards and club men who gallantly take to the field following a battle cry from the likes of Rigsy and Steve O’Shea, long may they continue to do so.

Following Argentina’s huge success as a tour the club followed the simple alphabet choice of a tour to Athens at the end of the season. From all reports this was a great success both on and off the field and there will no doubt be a tour to somewhere beginning with a B this season!!

And so we eagerly await another fine season of Old Blues Rugby. Pre- season training timetables have been announced, the clubhouse will have it’s the customary spring clean, the web site is being revamped and we have a strong committee and team captains in place. The fixtures have all been announced. All looks good!!

As a club we rely largely on volunteers to “step up” and without them the burden rests heavy on the shoulders of a few, so we are always actively looking for members to put themselves forward to help. If you are interested in doing this then please get in touch with myself or Olly Derbyshire, we have plenty that you could do! I would implore you to ensure you are paying the correct subscription by monthly direct debit or a match fee if you aren’t a regular player. I will be taking a close interest in this so beware – the subs police are out! This can be done easily online, amounts, debit forms and payment details are all available on the website.

I would like to thank again all the hard working officers of the club as well as our generous sponsor HDI Gerling for all the support they have shown both last season and for this coming season

Finally, good luck to everyone for a fantastic 2012/2013 season.
